3 Reasons to Support the Child & Dependent Care Tax Credit

The short session of the Indiana General Assembly is more than half way over. The Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit (CDCTC) is an amendment drafted by Lafayette’s own, State Representative, Sheila Klinker. It is a small piece of legislation that would be a big boost to working families. According to the bill’s synopsis, the legislation would provide a refundable income tax credit set at 50% of the amount allowed for the Federal CDCTC to individuals whose annual adjusted income is less than $45,000.  In a session where tax breaks for major corporations is at the top at legislative agenda for the Governor as well as House and Senate leaders, it seems only right and just to consider legislation that reduces the tax burden on the bedrock of our state, Hoosier families.Tax credits have little overhead and return millions of dollars to our community. In 2013, LUM helped low to moderate income families obtain refunds in excess of $2.5 million dollars, which included $ 1.1 million in Federal Earned Income Tax Credit.

In order to be considered in the current session the amendment must be matched with a bill pending in the House Ways and Means Committee. This is where your help is needed.  Please contact the legislators from the Greater Lafayette Area and ask that the amendment be considered.

Listed below are 3 reasons to support Child Dependent Care Tax Credit (CDCTC):

  1. CDCTC would benefit both low-income and middle-class families.
  2. CDCTC would take some of the burden off single parent households and reduce barriers to participation in the workforce.
  3. CDCTC allows low-income families to afford higher quality child care.

Below are a list of legislators from the Greater Lafayette Area who sit  on the House Ways and Means Committee. Please contact them by phone and/or email and request that  the amendment proposed by Representative Klinker receive consideration.

Thank you for being a champion of Hoosier families and making for sure that this amendment receives consideration in the House prior to the March 3rd deadline and is passed by both chambers before the session ends on March 14th
